Financial Help for Georgia’s Students with Special Needs

Georgia has opened an application period for money available for parents of students with special needs.

First announced in Governor Brian Kemp’s State of the State address, Georgia has $10 million dollars from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief funds earmarked for parents of students with special needs. The money can be used to reimburse expenses incurred because of COVID-19.

The list of expenses includes services such as tutoring support, counseling services and transportation.

There are approximately 222,000 Georgia students whose parents are eligible to apply for the reimbursement. 

Richmond County School System spokeswoman Lynthia Ross said, “We currently have 3,861 students with disabilities in RCSS.”

Columbia County School District spokeswoman Abbigail Remkus said, “We have approximately 3,170 special needs students.”

The link to the application is posted to the Georgia Department of Education’s website Reimbursement for Special Education Services (gadoe.org).

Governor Kemp said, “I am proud of the partnership between my office, State School Superintendent Richard Woods, the Georgia Department of Education, and state leaders for working to improve the lives of Georgia’s most vulnerable students. These reimbursements will help families overcome financial challenges faced during an unprecedented school year as we begin returning to normal in Georgia.”

The deadline to apply is May 14, 2021.

Dana Lynn McIntyre is an award-winning reporter who began working in radio news in her hometown of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She also worked as a television news photographer for a station in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Dana moved to Savannah, Ga. in 1984 to join the news team at WIXV-FM/I95 Radio. In early 1986, WBBQ Radio in Augusta invited her to interview for a position with the news department. Within three weeks, Dana was living in Olde Town and working at a legendary radio station. Among Dana’s awards from the Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association are for Excellence in General Assignment Reporting, Spot News and Specialized Reporting. Dana also received an award for Public Service Reporting from the West Augusta Rotary Club for a story with actor LeVar Burton on his PBS Television show “Reading Rainbow."
