An elderly man was found dead in his home following a fire on the 3400 block of Winesap Way in Augusta on New Year’s Day.
The victim was identified as 78-year-old Ernest Lamb. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded Wednesday to the scene and pronounced Lamb dead at 6:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
According to the Augusta Fire/EMA, firefighters initially responded to a medical call at approximately 5:34 p.m. Wednesday. When Engine 16 arrived, they discovered a fire inside the residence. During a search of the home, emergency responders located Lamb’s body. Authorities immediately notified the coroner, Georgia Power, and the Red Cross.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death, and the fire’s origin is still under investigation by fire officials.
