Fishing experience for special needs youth comes to McCormick this month

Date: May 12, 2025

A fishing event will be held in the area for children with special needs on May 31.

America’s Boating Club Clarks Hill/Thurmond Lake are partnering with the C.A.S.T (Catch A Special Thrill) for Kids Foundation to make the event possible at the Dorn Fishing Facility in McCormick, S.C.

This will be a free boating and fishing experience or children with special needs, open to ages 6-18. Participants must pre-register online and the space is limited to the first 40 who register.

If boat space allows, additional siblings and family members may be able to go boating as well, but only the participant and one parent or guardian are guaranteed to go boating during the event.

“This will be a great event, and we have been blessed with volunteers, sponsors and boat captains so we are well prepared to conduct it – we just need the participants,” said Local Squadron Commander Gary Edwards in a press release. “Parents and guardians of local special needs children are encouraged to sign up now; there is no cost to take part and we even provide lunch afterwards.”

Participants will also receive a free fishing pole, tackle box, event t-shirt and cap and award plaque. The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, now in its 34th year,  hosts annual fishing and boating events across America to provide children with special needs a quality outdoor recreational experience. A complete national schedule is available online.
