Fishy practices and floor eggs leads to this week’s worst scores

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections on July 7–11.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was an 80 earned by the Augusta Miyabi, the Miyabi Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse, located at 1315 Augusta West Parkway, in Augusta.

During the inspection, the inspector noted witnessing food improperly stored, which resulted in a nine-point deduction.

“Observed raw fish and chicken stored above sliced lemons,” the report stated. “When storing food ensure food items are correctly protected & separated by cook to temperatures.”

The inspector also reported witnessing further food storage, resulting in another three-point reduction to the health score

“Observed food items stored on the floor in the dry storage room,” the report stated. “Store all food items at least 6″ off the floor.”

The inspector also deducted a point from the health score for a lack of proper equipment in the kitchen.

“Observed no test strips for sanitizer being used,” the report stated. “Obtain test strips.”

The inspector also deducted another point for seeing unclean kitchen appliances.

“Observed buildup on sides and back sides of cooking equipment,” the report stated. “Clean. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup.”

The second lowest score of the week was an 83 given to Tailwind AGS, located at 1501 Aviation Way, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted a total of nine points for noticing temperature control safety (TCS) food improperly stored.

“Observed TCS food in open face reach in coolers above 41 degrees F for cold holding in cafe and terminal,” the report stated.

During the inspection, the inspector deducted another three points for noticing a lack of kitchen equipment.

“Observed no thermometers in open face reach in coolers,” the report stated. “Obtain thermometers for coolers.”

For noticing the more food improperly stored, the establishment lost another three points.

“Observed eggs stored on floor of walk in cooler,” the report stated. “Store all food at least 6 inches above the floor. Cook moved eggs off of floor.”

The establishment also lost another point for not properly cleaning food from kitchen areas.

“Observed old egg on floor under shelves in [walk in cooler],” the report stated. “Clean more frequently to avoid buildup.”

Following the Tailwind inspection, the third lowest score of the week was an 84 given to Checkers, located at 2901 Peach Orchard Road, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted a total of nine points for noticing improperly stored food.

“Observed chicken in PTW at 90F and 87F,” the report stated.

During the inspection, the inspector deducted another point for noticing a lack of proper cleaning within the facility’s kitchen

“Observed food and spots of standing water on the floor. Observed grease build up around fryer,” the report stated.

After observing insect activity in the kitchen as well, the establishment’s health inspection score lost another three points.

“Observed flies in main kitchen area entering through openings around the back door,” the report stated.

The establishment lost another point for having damage inside the establishment’s walk in cooler.

“Observed walk in cooler floor has major crack. Observed missing tiles and coving,” the report stated. “Clean and/or have serviced.”
