Richmond County authorities have charged five people in this week’s jailhouse stabbing of Dashawn Curtis, an inmate being held for a March murder.

Devontae Sims, 21; Lavelton Philpot, 20; Sherrod Boyd, 18; Carlos Mack, 20; and Cosby Murry, 22, will each have an aggravated assault charged added to their pending cases.

Authorities say they were all involved in the fight Tuesday that led to the bloody stabbing at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. The incident began as a fight between multiple inmates assigned to the same housing unit, authorities sad. During the fight, Philpot allegedly stabbed Curtis multiple times.

Dashawn Curtis

Curtis was transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, which required stitches. Curtis was discharged and returned to jail Wednesday morning.

The stabbing victim is in the jail awaiting trial for a March 27 murder. He is accused of killing 20-year-old Tyler Shank on Poteet Street in Augusta. When deputies answered a call about gunfire, officers found the Thomson man lying on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound.

At least one of the suspects in the stabbing is also being held on a murder charge. Danyale Mack is one of four suspects accused of killing 20-year-old Deivante McFadden in January 2020.

The other backgrounds: Sims was incarcerated on April 16, 2019, and Murry on June 25, 2020, for armed robbery. Boyd was jailed on Sept. 14, 2020, for aggravated assault.  Philpot was arrested and booked into the jail on May 21, 2018, for aggravated assault and armed robbery.
