Lucas Grant, who ran for Aiken County Sheriff in the recent election, has announced his decision to join the Republican Party, citing a deepened commitment to serving his community and aligning with the values that reflect the region’s needs.
In the November race, Grant ran as a Democrat, earning more votes than any other local Democratic candidate. Though he did not secure the sheriff’s position, Grant called the experience “humbling” in a press release, saying it has only strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for the people of Aiken County.
He did not indicate whether he plans to run again for sheriff in 2028, when he would have to oppose incumbent Republican Sheriff Marty Sawyer in the primary. Grant continues to work for the Wagener Police Department after leaving the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, where he helped take down nearly 100 gangs, seize more than 250 guns, and held a nearly 95% arrest and conviction rate in homicide cases.
Grant made it clear this week that that switching parties does not diminish the support he received from Democratic voters during his campaign.
“I’m proud of the broad coalition we built. My mission has always been to serve every resident of Aiken County, and that commitment hasn’t changed,” he said. “I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Looking toward the future, Grant remains focused on his continued involvement in local service. “While I’m disappointed by the outcome, I am grateful for the lessons learned,” he added. “I will remain ready for any future opportunity to serve and trust in God’s plan for me.”
Grant emphasized that his decision to affiliate with the Republican Party is based on his belief that effective leadership goes beyond party lines.
“At the end of the day, this is about community, not partisanship. I will always put people first, keep preparing, and work toward a safer, stronger future for Aiken County.”
