FreshTake Grocery, the new supermarket concept by Alabama grocery magnate Jackson Mitchell, now has an official opening date: Monday, Jan. 20.

FreshTake announced its plans to launch the inaugural location of the new store chain in Augusta, in the former Whole Foods building at the Washington Plaza shopping center, in 2023, breaking ground on the location in November of that year.

Construction has been going on at the site since, to renovate the 42,000-square foot to accommodate a variety of shopping, dining and lounging amenities including a Starbucks, a butcher shop, a fire pit and a beer and wine bar.

“We are beyond excited to officially welcome the Augusta community to FreshTake,” said Mitchell. “This store represents my vision of what grocery shopping should be: a blend of convenience, quality, and community. We’ve designed every detail of FreshTake to make shopping an experience customers look forward to, and I couldn’t think of a better place to launch this concept than here in Augusta.”

The completion and opening of the store had originally been projected for summer of last year, though by September the burgeoning grocery chain had still been reassuring the public of its plans to soon open on social media.

However, FreshTake was still able to acknowledge Augusta’s struggles amid Hurricane Helene, posting in October that it had donated resources to the city for relief by way of Little Giant Farmers Market—a Georgia supermarket chain also owned by Mitchell—and Golden Harvest Food Bank.

This coming Monday will be the grocery’s soft opening. This will be followed by a grand opening event on Jan. 30, store announced earlier this week its plan to have a soft opening, followed by a grand opening event on Jan. 30, complete with a ribbon-cutting, giveaways and promotions, “our way of thanking the community for its patience and support as we’ve worked to make FreshTake a reality,” Mitchell said.
