A former bank may become a funeral home if the city proves favorable towards a petitioner out of Covington, Ga.
In early November, Joseph Burnett, owner of Final Curtain Call Funeral & Removal Service, submitted a request to Augusta’s planning department for a special exception at 1749 Gordon Hwy., to allow the establishment of a funeral service.
The property, zoned Neighborhood Business (B-1), was formerly a Bank of America branch. HPS Investments purchased the parcel in 2017, before it changed hands to its current owner, Hyung Goo Kim of North Brunswick, N.J.
The former bank sits on busy spot along the Gordon Highway corridor, alluded to in Burnett’s letter of intent where he notes the location’s accessibility from major roads. Just west of the parcel is the Engleside Annex subdivision; and across the street is the long vacant Regency Mall property.
The Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the request during its Jan. 6 meeting.
