The downtown Health Sciences campus has experienced a significant gas leak after a vehicle hit a gas meter, according to an email sent out to Augusta University students and faculty.

Although several buildings, especially those among the research corridor’s facilities, have been affected, and their indoor temperature levels are yet to return to normal. The gas leak was successfully turned off, and Environmental Health and Safety has determined the area safe.

Boilers have been deactivated for the time being, causing the temperature change within some of the buildings, and R.A. Dent Boulevard was blocked off at the impacted area between the Georgia Cancer Center’s parking deck and John Wesley Gilbert Drive for a few hours.

“Facilities is working to minimize this impact,” said a statement from the university’s email.

At approximately 2 p.m., R.A. Dent Boulevard, Goss Lane and John Wesley Gilbert Drive were reopened.
