THOMSON – A Thomson man is in custody Wednesday after allegedly shooting his wife.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, McDuffie County 911 received a call from James Wilson III, 74, regarding a shooting in the 1400 block of Augusta Highway in Thomson.

When deputies arrived, they found Wilson sitting in the front yard with a gun to his chest, according to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies negotiated with Wilson for nearly two hours before he surrendered to McDuffie County law enforcement personnel. Members of the Columbia County Special Response Team entered the residence to find the body of Virginia Sue Wilson in a rear bedroom.

The preliminary investigation indicates James Wilson III shot Virginia Sue Wilson, 75, just prior to the 911 call, the news release said.

Wilson has been arrested and charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony regarding the shooting death of his wife, Virginia Sue Wilson, 75 years old. James Wilson III is currently in custody at the McDuffie County Jail.

Virginia Wilson’s body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur where an autopsy will be performed.

The GBI Region 7 Field Office and the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation, the news release said. Upon completion, the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Toombs Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI at (706) 595-2575 or the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 595-2040.
