Georgia defeats Binghamton in NCAA tournament opener

The seventh ranked Georgia Bulldogs opened their NCAA Baseball Tournament campaign with an offensive explosion to defeat Binghamton, 20-4, at Foley Field in Athens on Friday. 

The Bulldogs were led on offense by Tre Phelps and Dan Jackson, who each hit two home runs. Georgia’s offense was propelled by standout performances from Tre Phelps and Daniel Jackson, who each hit two of the team’s five home runs. Phelps went 4-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored, while Jackson added six RBIs and three runs. Nolan McCarthy added another homer for Georgia, connecting in the eighth inning. 

The Bulldogs had 15 hits and drew 10 walks for the day and scored runs in six of the eight innings in which they batted. Georgia jumped out early, scoring five times in the first inning, highlighted by Phelps’ two-run homer and Jackson’s three-run shot. 

On the mound, Leighton Finley earned the win, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Zach Brown closed out the game, yielding two runs over 2.1 innings. 

With the win, Georgia (43–15) advances to face Duke (38-19), who defeated Oklahoma State on Friday night, in a Saturday evening game in Athens.
