The expansion of GIW Industries, also known as Georgia Iron Works, is further underway according to a recent rezoning request submitted to the Columbia County planning department.
The company, which manufactures slurry pumps for mining, has petitioned to rezone several parcels of land along Morris Road and Sanders Drive, totaling more than 50 acres, from R-1 Single-family Residential to M-2 General Industrial.
The subject properties sit behind the GIW facility at 5000 Wrightsboro Road. The rezoning request anticipates further development of the site that began circa 2014, with the first phase of a $44 million expansion project that included a new distribution center.
In August of last year, the Columbia County Board of Commissioners voted to approve new signage at the GIW Grovetown campus, part of a “site-wide beautification project.”
Since 1996, GIW has been a subsidiary KSB Group, a German mining equipment manufacturer.
Two years ago, GIW celebrated the completion of its 140,000 square foot large casting capacity increase facility, or foundry, that quadrupled its capacity to mold castings over 20,000 pounds and its maximum pouring output by up to 66,000 pounds, according to KSB’s website.
The Columbia County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the rezoning request in its May 16 meeting.
