A Gloverville man shot his mother in the head Sunday night and required negotiations with a SWAT team before surrendering at the family home on Lawana Drive, authorities said.
Authorities say Zayvian Patrick Butler, 20, is expected to be charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The victim was identified as his mother, 46-year-old Adrienne S. Richardson, who was pronounced deceased on scene at 1:14 a.m. Monday from a gunshot wound to her head. She will be autopsied Thursday in Newberry, Coroner Darryl Ables said.
At approximately 11:24 p.m. Sunday, deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office were called to 518 Lawana Drive for reports of a shooting. Upon arriving, they found multiple bullet holes in the front door of the home. Witnesses at the scene told deputies that Butler was armed and suicidal. He had fired several rounds inside the residence, striking a female victim, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Eric Abdullah said.
Aiken County’s SWAT team and additional first responders were quickly called to the scene. After a period of crisis negotiations, Butler surrendered peacefully without further incident. Deputies discovered the victim’s body in a bedroom, where she had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the face.
Butler was arrested and taken to the Aiken County Detention Center. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, is continuing its investigation into the incident.
Butler was charged last month with assault & battery in the third degree. The details of that case were not immediately clear.
Meanwhile, the victim was being remembered online by those who knew her or worked with her at the Captain D’s on Whiskey Road. Whitney Burgess said, “The team of Captain DS on Whiskey Road in Aiken, SC sends our deepest condolences to the family of Adrienne Richardson. We love you, Ms. Adrienne, and you will be truly missed.”
Nea Sapp added, “I grew up around her but haven’t seen her in a while now. One day I pulled up to Captain D’s and she almost came out of the window to hug me. Lord she was so sweet, I’m so sorry. Sending my deepest condolences.”
