Doctors Hospital of Augusta has donated $10,000 to Golden Harvest Food Bank in support of the annual It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® campaign, one of the region’s largest grassroots efforts to fight hunger.

The campaign, which runs throughout October, began as a neighborhood food drive and has since grown into a virtual initiative with participation from businesses, schools, community groups and churches across Georgia and South Carolina.

Funds raised help provide nutritious meals to families, children, and seniors struggling with food insecurity.

Last year, the campaign pivoted to provide emergency food relief following Hurricane Helene, according to a press release from Doctors Hospital of Augusta. This year, rising costs of living and economic pressures have increased demand for assistance.

“Doctors Hospital is honored to support It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® and stand with Golden Harvest in their fight to end hunger in our community,” said Chief Executive Officer of Doctors Hospital of Augusta Joanna Conley. “Access to healthy, nutritious food is essential for wellness. When our neighbors are nourished, they are stronger, healthier, and better able to thrive.”

Conley said supporting the campaign is part of the hospital’s commitment to caring for the whole community, not only within hospital walls, but also beyond them.

Every $2 raised through the campaign provides five meals to those in need. Community members can contribute by hosting a virtual food drive or joining drives already underway.

Amy Breitmann, president and CEO of Golden Harvest Food Bank, emphasized the importance of such support, and gratefulness for Doctors Hospital’s support on the It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® campaign.

“The reality is that thousands of families in our region are struggling to put food on the table,” she said. “This campaign brings us together in generosity and kindness, reminding us that no one should face hunger alone. With community partners like Doctors Hospital, we can bring nourishment and hope where it’s needed most.”
