Golf movies to watch to get in the spirit before the Masters tournament

Before watching the Masters at the end of this week, here are some golf movies to get you in the spirit and mindset of the game.

“Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius” is a 2004 film starring Jim Caviezel, Claire Forlani, Jeremy Northam, Malcolm McDowell and Aidan Quinn. This biographical film is based on the life of Bobby Jones, who was the only player to win all four men’s major golf championships in a single year, 1930. Those majors were The Amateur Championship in Britain, the U.S. Amateur, The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. Jones would go on to create The Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters. This movie is rated PG.

“Happy Gilmore” is a 1996 movie starring Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Carl Weathers that is rated PG-13. The movie is about an unsuccessful hockey player (Adam Sandler) who takes his hockey skills to the golf course to try and save his grandmother’s house from the IRS.

“Full Swing” is a 2023 documentary on Netflix that follows several PGA golfers, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Ian Poulter, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and more.

“The Greatest Game Ever Played” is a 2005 movie that stars Shia LaBeouf, Stephen Dillane, Stephen Marcus, and Josh Flitter. This is a biographical sports film about Francis Ouimet during his amateur golf years and his shocking win of the U.S. Open in 1913. During that win he defeated Harry Vardon, the 1900 U.S. Open champ. The movie is rated PG.

“The Legend of Bagger Vance” is a 2000 move that stars Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. The film is about a golfer who is struggling and attempts to fix his game and his life with help from a “mystical caddy.” This movie is rated PG-13.

“Golf in the Kingdom” is a 2010 movie starring David O’Hara, Malcolm McDowell and Mason Gamble. Michael, an American philosophy student, is heading to India when he stops in Scotland at Links of Burningbush for a last round of golf before giving up the game for good. This movie is rated PG.

“Miracle on the 17th Green” is a 1999 movie that stars Robert Urich, Meredith Baxter and Donnelly Rhodes. A 50-year-old man loses his job and instead of finding a new one, he decides to try his hand at making it on the senior golf tour. This decision causes him to neglect his family and wife.
