Graniteville man threatens to shoot children in brief standoff

A Graniteville man was arrested Friday after threatening to shoot two children or himself in a mobile home, according to Aiken County authorities.

Garrick Johnson, 30, was seen with a weapon Friday morning when deputies were called to the trailer on a dirt road on Crae Leilei Circle, not far from Breezy Hill Road. The man went back inside the home and the SWAT team was called, but deputies got custody of the suspect before the back-up arrived, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. The children were unharmed.

Johnson was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and pointing or presenting a weapon. He was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center, where he was photographed shirtless in his mugshot.

Johnson had a previous DUI arrest in November from the S.C. Highway Patrol. At that time, he lived in Beech Island. He also had a 2014 disorderly conduct arrest in Augusta

Johnson’s relationship to the children was not clear.
