Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) is seeing safety through a new lens with its Green Eyes Safety Review Team, a proactive initiative by the Construction Services department that is transforming how safety is monitored across the Savannah River Site (SRS).
Launched in 2022, the Green Eyes Safety Review Team offers a “fresh eyes” approach by regularly inspecting construction zones, storage areas and workspaces to identify hazards, promote safe behavior and ensure compliance with procedures.
The initiative has been instrumental in supporting SRS’s longstanding safety culture, which has earned more than 200 safety awards since 2008, according to a press release from SRS.
In 2024, SRNS-Construction marked a major milestone: completing the year without a single lost workday, bringing the department’s total to over 2 million safe work hours.

“Safety is never an afterthought with this group,” said SRNS Director of Construction Services Chandler Elkins. “The Green Eyes team adds an essential layer of oversight and has become a model practice for many of our facilities.”
Each month, the team conducts walkdowns, engages with field workers, checks work documents and coaches on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Their thorough inspections span high-profile SRS facilities including General Plant, H-Canyon, Tritium and Savannah River National Laboratory, among others.
“Our goal is proactive risk mitigation,” said SRNS Construction Program Compliance and Fire Protection Coordinator Corbin Seigler. “We address potential issues like PPE mishaps and storage violations before they become problems.”
SRNS Construction Site Superintendent Bobby Hill noted the impact on workplace culture.
“We’re creating an environment where workers feel safe reporting concerns and trust the process of resolution,” Hill said. “That’s how real safety progress happens.”
The core Green Eyes team includes representatives from compliance, safety, engineering and management—each bringing a unique perspective to improve conditions on-site, according to a press release from SRS.

Their findings are documented and communicated with area management to ensure accountability and continual improvement.
“The Green Eyes Safety Review Team is central to maintaining our excellent safety record,” Elkins said. “By addressing both technical and behavioral risks early, we’re protecting people and strengthening our culture of safety.”
