The Columbia County Board of Commissioners recognized the Greenbrier Girls Golf Team as 2023 state champions during the meeting on Aug. 1.

Commissioner Gary Richardson read a proclamation that states this is the first state championship in the history of the school for the Greenbrier Girls Golf Team.

“Whereas, this victory was the culmination of a season of hard work, exemplary sportsmanship and teamwork among this group of young women; and Whereas, Columbia County celebrates the 2023 winning title of 5A State Champions for the girls golf team and wishes to honor them for their leadership, hard work, and athleticism; and Whereas, the entire coaching staff, team parents, faculty, student body, and loyal fans were an integral part in bringing the team to victory through their unwavering support,” the proclamation reads.

Golf Coach Casey Heckathorn thanked everyone for their support, and for the government lesson the girls received during the millage rate hearing that was held before the meeting.

“Very nice to acknowledged by the community,” Heckathorn said. “Golf is a sport that doesn’t always get the fanfare of a stadium full of people to cheer for them, so these opportunities, I think these girls feel good about what they did.”

Those from the golf team attendance were Heckathorn, Assistant Golf Coach Daniel Jordan, and players Adyson Lukich, Zion Young, Avery Simpson, Benton Vineyard, Madi Link, Anna Wicklum and Reagan Henderson.

The Greenbrier Girls Golf Team was also recognized at the July 11 Columbia County Board of Education meeting.
