A class at Greenbrier High School had to be relocated Monday due to potential fentanyl exposure.
In a notice sent to parents on Monday, it said a student brought a rolled-up dollar bill on campus and a small amount of an unknown white, powdery substance fell out of it. The administration was notified and contacted the Columbia County School District Police.
“Upon further investigation, the student reportedly picked up the bill off the ground at a gas station parking lot off campus. When the bill was unrolled in the classroom on the 700 hall, a small amount of the substance fell into the student’s lap. A field test showed the substance potentially contained fentanyl. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office narcotics team was contacted to confiscate the substance for more conclusive testing,” the notice said.
There were one teacher and several other students in the classroom at the time, but they did not come into contact with the substance. There have been no report of reaction to the substance, but the school is taking precautions by relocation the class to another location while the room is cleaned and sanitized by hazardous materials professionals.
“Please rest assured that the Columbia County School District Police is working closely with narcotics professionals in responding to this incident to ensure the safe operation of our facilities,” the notice said.
