Grovetown bicyclist fatally struck by train while trying to cross tracks

Date: March 01, 2024

A 66-year-old Grovetown man lost his life after being struck by a train while attempting to cross the tracks on his bicycle, according to Maj. Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Maj. Morris, the incident occurred Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Washington Road and Baston Road in Martinez. Witnesses reported that the man, Dwayne Reindeaux Carter, was attempting to beat the approaching train when the crossing arms descended. Despite the warning signals, Carter continued onto the tracks and tragically fell from his bicycle just as the train, traveling eastward, approached the intersection.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, including deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and paramedics. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries, and both he and his bicycle were found near the train tracks upon their arrival.

The incident caused a temporary disruption to train services in the area, with the train eventually coming to a stop as authorities responded to the scene. Maj. Morris stated that a sheet was placed over the victim as investigators worked to gather information about the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The location of the incident, near the Maner Building Supply in Martinez, saw an influx of law enforcement and emergency personnel as they worked to secure the area and investigate the tragic event.
