A Grovetown woman has been arrested for a violent beating of her 9-year-old granddaughter for not going to sleep, according to Grovetown Police.

Mae Frances Williams, 66, was charged with three counts of cruelty to children.

The investigation began May 12 when officers were called to Grovetown Elementary School for a student with injuries. GPD Officer R. Palmer met with the school’s guidance counselor, who had been informed about injuries to the girl. According to the counselor’s account, the victim had visible injuries on her head, neck, back and arms, with dried blood behind her right ear.

The student disclosed to the counselor that her grandmother had struck her with a belt because she refused to go to sleep.

Officer Palmer promptly contacted the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Photos of the injuries were taken.
