A Grovetown shooting that injured a child over the weekend was not a drive-by, according to officials.

Previous reports said a the 16-month-old child had been injured while in the crib after a bullet went through the house. The child was treated for a superficial scalp wound after being grazed by a bullet.

“Prior to the call on Congling Circle, there were several calls received in reference to gun shots being heard in the area of the 500 block of Lory Lane. While officers were responding to that area, the call was received in reference to the child being struck by gunfire at the residence on Congling Circle. The child was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment of a superficial scalp injury and was able to return home later Saturday morning,” according to a news release issued late Monday from Chief Jamey Kitchens with the Grovetown Department of Public Safety.

Kitchens went onto say that the “trajectory of the bullets and the location in which they struck the residence” support the idea that the incident was not a drive-by, but rather an incident involving someone “acting recklessly with a firearm.”

Surveillance cameras in the area captured some footage before and after the calls were received, but none of them showed vehicles or people firing at the residence.

“Based on the projectiles recovered, we believe that the weapon used was a handgun, and not a rifle. We will continue to work to identify those responsible and will make the appropriate charges should they be identified. As always, we encourage anyone with information to come forward as it may assist us with solving this crime,” the release concluded.
