The Grovetown Warriors softball team emerged from Super Regional play as the Class AAAAAAA Position D champions Thursday by defeating Marist in a pitchers duel, 1-0. That means the Warriors are on their way to Columbus to compete in the Class AAAAAA state tournament.

Before that, Grovetown bested Woodward Academy 11-1 and topped Marist for the first time, 3-1 on Wednesday. All of it earned the Warriors a Super Regional crown and a berth in the Class AAAAAA state tournament.

Grovetown will face Newnan (23-7, 13-1 in Region 5-AAAAAA) on Wednesday, Oct. 25 in Columbus, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. The way the bracket is set up, if the Warriors defeat Newton, they may find themselves up against a familiar foe on Thursday, Oct. 26.

South Effingham plays in the same region as Grovetown and finished at the top of the standings at the end of the regular season. The Mustangs will play Pope in their first round game in Columbus, also set for a 1 p.m. first pitch. If both South Effingham and Grovetown win their Wednesday games, they’ll  remain in the winner’s bracket and face off for the fourth time this season on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Effingham County, which is also in Grovetown’s region, will open its time in Columbus with a 5 p.m. matchup with Lassiter, also on Wednesday.

Harlem (24-8) will join Grovetown as the only other team from the area to advance to Columbus. The Bulldogs snagged their Super Regional crown in Class AAA by defeating Thomasville (10-0), Mary Persons (5-1) and Savannah Christian (14-8) in Super Regional play this week. Harlem will face Gordon Lee (28-3-1, 13-1 in Region 6-AAA) also on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
