Steamed bagels make for hardy meals at a new eatery in Evans.
Headquartered in Greenville, S.C., Sully’s Steamers is a burgeoning sandwich shop chain that offers a colorful variety of robust selections made with steamed bagels. The menu boasts an array of signature sandwiches with ingredients with options ranging from roast beef, meatballs, turkey and pastrami to salmon, chicken salad and bacon and eggs.
“When we steam it, the bagel turns into, basically, into a bun,” said manager Dante Camia. “Now all the ingredients melt into the bun, and it’s just a perfect combination.”

The first CSRA franchise opened in the Premiere development on Ronald Reagan Drive, Wednesday, by franchisee Corey Hays. After trying the food out in Greenville while visiting his daughter, Hays was so impressed that he contacted founder Robert Sullivan about opening a location in the Augusta area.
Two years later, Hays and Camia were doing street promotion to get the word out that Sully’s was on its way, including giving away cards outside the Columbia County Performing Arts Center during the “Pretty Woman: The Musical” show.

Since Wednesday, Camia says the Griswold, a hefty number with turkey, bacon, pepper jack and peppercorn, and the Nacho Maximus, a turkey sandwich encrusted with peppercorn and Doritos, have proven the most popular orders.
“People like Doritos,” Camia said. “It’s a good crunch, and that softness, it makes a great contrast.”

The Evans restaurant is Sully’s 16th location, the other 15 scattered throughout North and South Carolina and Georgia. Before opening in Columbia County, locals could travel as close as Lexington and Columbia in South Carolina and Athens in Georgia to find one. Hays hopes the Evans spot will be the first of several throughout the CSRA, including Augusta, Aiken and Edgefield.
