A Richmond County deputy who collided with a vehicle Wednesday night that killed the other driver was rushing to help a fellow officer, authorities said.

Deputy Casey Donald was “responding to a deputy involved in a fight,” said Franka Young with the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

“Deputy Donald was traveling south on State Route 56 with his lights and sirens activated,” Young said in an email. “A 2009 Toyota Camry was traveling north on State Route 56.  The driver of the sedan, Deidre Briggs, turned left in front of the Deputy causing the front of his patrol vehicle to strike the right side of her vehicle.”

Briggs, 34, of Augusta, was partially ejected and transported to Augusta University Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.  The deputy sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he was expected to survive.

Deputy Donald has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since April of 2019 and is assigned to Road Patrol Operations, RCSO Sgt. William McCarty said.

The case is still being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
