A firearm was confiscated at Westside High School on Tuesday morning after administrators intervened in an exchange of weapons between students, according to the Richmond County Board of Education.
In a statement, district spokesperson Haley Lacuesta said the incident began when a student brought a pair of nunchucks to campus and exchanged them with another student. School administrators quickly stepped in and conducted a search.
During that search, both the nunchucks and a gun were found and confiscated. The student involved has not been publicly identified.
According to Lacuesta, the case is now being handled by Richmond County School System Police “following applicable laws and the Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.”
No injuries were reported, and the school continued normal operations after the incident.
The news comes less than a week after a Copeland Elementary School student brought a toy gun to school and showed it to other students in the hallway, saying that it was a real gun. School officials said that incident last Thursday was distressing to other students. Administrators confiscated the toy gun, and the incident was addressed following the district’s Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.
