Harlem City Council approves line of credit for city’s Urban Redevelopment Agency

Date: September 25, 2024

Harlem City Council voted to renew a pledge of guarantee for the city’s Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA), during its regular meeting Monday evening.

In 2015 the city established the URA, which meets monthly at Harlem City Hall, to implement its City Center Plan. The agency currently has property available to sell at 275 W. Milledgeville Rd., according to the city’s website.

The council had previously approved the renewal of a line of credit for the URA with Firstate Bank, of $250,000, the same amount renewed in Monday’s meeting.

The council also voted to approve a conditional use request by Augusta Golf Carts to allow a location for its golf cart sale and rental business at 500 W. Milledgeville Road, which is already zoned B-3 Business.

Community Development Institute (CDI) Head Start, a nonprofit based in Colorado, is to lease property in the city to start a local office branch for its programs. CDI Head Start helps manage programs for the U.S. Office of Head Start—which itself supports school-readiness for underprivileged children and assistance for their families.

The council approved a temporary alcohol permit for its annual Ladies Night Out event on Oct. 19, and agreed that Sept. 30 will be proclaimed Georgia Reads Day, participating in the Georgia Council on Literacy’s statewide campaign to recognize and support communities’ efforts to advance literacy.
