A Hephzibah man is under indictment in U.S. District Court for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Hunter W. Taylor, 25, faces the firearm charge as well as possession of an unregistered firearm, a short-barrel rifle.
In the Augusta Circuit, Taylor has pending indictments for battery at both the Richmond and Burke county jails as well as for reckless conduct and theft by receiving in Richmond County.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District has prosecuted more than 800 defendants in the last four years on firearms offenses, primarily possession of a firearm after a prior felony conviction, according to a news release.
The cases are prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods in conjunction with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
“Guns in the hands of convicted felons present a danger to the community,” said Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District.
Augusta man Demmerio Swint, 29, was recently sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after Savannah police found pistols in his pocket and his vehicle during a November 2021 traffic stop.
