Historic Augusta, Inc. will host a special book signing with native Augustan Dr. Joy Hughes Mallard on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Boyhood Home of Joseph Rucker Lamar, 415 Seventh St.
Mallard will sign copies of her newly published work, “Justice Joseph Rucker Lamar’s Augusta, Georgia,” which features rare photographs of Augusta landmarks and streetscapes captured by Lamar around the turn of the 20th century.
The images — many never before published — include scenes of his homes on Greene Street and Johns Road, according to a press release from Historic Augusta, Inc.
Lamar, a lifelong Augustan, built a distinguished legal career that led to appointments on both the Georgia Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
His photographs, paired with Mallard’s narrative, provide historical insight into both his life and the city’s development during his era.
Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event for $39.95 plus tax.
Guests will also be able to take advantage of a special offer: Buy One, Get One Free tours of the adjacent Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson, available on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m. for lunch).
The afternoon event offers visitors the chance to meet the author, explore Augusta’s history, and step inside the home where Justice Lamar grew up, according to a press release from Historic Augusta, Inc.
