The last holiday of the summer is fast approaching and motorists will have an easier time navigating on major roads in Georgia and South Carolina.

The Georgia Department of Transportations will suspend lanes closures on interstates and state routes beginning at noon Friday, Sept. 2. The suspension will be lifted at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

GDOT anticipates the heaviest traffic volumes during the five-day Labor Day holiday weekend will be on Friday. Moderate traffic is expected on Saturday with light traffic on Sunday and Monday.

In South Carolina, the Department of Transportation will prohibit lanes closures on interstates for non-emergency highway work. That begins at 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2 and runs through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Both states provide real-time updates on traffic and weather conditions by phone, online and through an app for iPhones and Android cell phones.

Calling 511 in either state will connect you with an automated system where you can choose what information you need. Access on the web is at www.511ga.org or www.511sc.org.

Georgia 511 also allows you to request assistance on the road. In metro Atlanta the service is provided by HERO (Hero Emergency Response Operator) units. Other regions, including metro Augusta, are assisted by CHAMP (Coordinated Highway Assistance and Maintenance Program). Both services are provided free of charge.
