Homicide in Augusta amid Hurricane Helene recovery efforts

Date: September 29, 2024

A man was fatally shot Saturday evening as Augusta continues to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a gunshot victim at the intersection of 10th and Florence Streets at 5:28 p.m. Saturday. Deputies arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, authorities confirmed.

Two individuals have been detained in connection with the shooting, but officials have not released further details as the investigation remains active.

This incident comes as Augusta residents grapple with widespread damage and power outages following Hurricane Helene, which made landfall earlier this week. Emergency personnel remain stretched thin as the community works to restore essential services.

No information about the victim’s identity or a possible motive for the shooting has been released. Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate.
