A Hornsby Middle School mom spent her fourth day in jail Friday after encouraging her son to participate in a schoolyard fight that injured him.
Jawannica Haynes, 31, of Azalea Drive, Augusta, was charged Tuesday with child cruelty, disrupting public school, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of Oxycodone. She’s being held without bond on the felony cruelty charge.
On April 17, she was “yelling and screaming profanities” in the Hornsby parking lot while trying to get juveniles to fight, according to an arrest warrant. It was 4 p.m. that day when she allegedly walked her 12-year-old son through the parking lot to fight another student.
“The accused then watched and cheered on as the victim was repeatedly punched violently in the face by another student,” an arrest warrant says.
When Haynes was arrested for the crime Tuesday, officers found two Oxycodone pills in her purse, unpackaged, in violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act.
The mother is a repeat offender when it comes to endangering her children, with at least five tickets for failure to restrain a child or have them wear a seat belt, according to online records. Haynes also has previous arrests for shoplifting , giving false information to police and driving on a suspended license.
