Paying homage to sisterly bonds across the country on Aug. 6, National Sisters Day was created to give siblings the chance to honor their long cherished relationship from being childhood partners-in-crime to adult comrades.

Whether it’s celebrating a longtime best friend, step sibling and sister-in-law, the holiday gives everyone the opportunity to commemorate the spirit of sisterhood by sharing fond memories or creating new ones.

Below are a couple of suggestions to help display your sororal love:

  • Write your sister a heartfelt letter, poem or card in a creative way to express your appreciation of being there for one another through the thick and thin
  • Take a few hours to get manis and pedis together and reminisce over the years together, or plan in advance and reserve a slot for a spa day or weekend to soak in the benefits of a massage and facial
  • Visit downtown’s Augusta Candle Company, located at 1124 Broad St., and bond while making your very own candle with any scent you desire – maybe even create a matching set to remind yourselves of the day you spent together each time you light it afterwards.
  • Go shopping and grab a meal together in downtown Augusta at one of the many unique restaurants, such as Solé Augusta, Pineapple Ink Tavern or Soy Noodle House.
  • Have a home movie night and watch your old childhood favorites together while sharing a bottle of wine
  • Remake a famously beloved family recipe – recreate a delicious dessert or a savory hot meal and see if you can whip it up as good as grandma and mom.
  • Visit an escape room: Get a couple of girlfriends together and see if you can solve various puzzles to break out of an escape room at Mastermind Escape Games Augusta.
  • Enjoy a little friendly competition with a game at Topgolf, located at 437 Topgolf Way, or a round of bowling at Bowlero Augusta or Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center.
  • Make a new memory creating something beautiful side-by-side at Evans’ Artsy Me, a ceramic and art studio located at 4275 Washington Rd, and swap memories as you paint your chosen work of art
  • Create a scrapbook together, or add to an old one, and discuss your top favorite moments spent together and what made them so special

While there are many ways to celebrate one’s sister, the most important thing each of us can do to meaningfully express their feelings is simple – by saying the words ‘I love you.’

“She is my sounding board, my confidante, my keeper of secrets – and my best friend,” said Kathleen O’Keefe.

How are you choosing to celebrate?
