BRUNSWICK, GA — The Georgia Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a major milestone in the state’s economic development as Hyundai Motor Group officially opened its new Metaplant in Ellabell on March 27and announced a significant expansion in its investment.
The automotive giant will now invest a total of $12.6 billion in Georgia and produce 500,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually, solidifying the state’s role as a national leader in EV manufacturing.
Originally slated as a $5.54 billion project with a capacity of 300,000 units per year, Hyundai’s new announcement marks a substantial increase in both scope and impact, according to a press release from the Georgia Chamber.
The facility remains the largest economic development project in Georgia’s history.
Hyundai’s roots in the state date back to 2005 with the construction of Kia’s manufacturing plant in West Point. This new chapter highlights the company’s long-term commitment to Georgia’s workforce and economy.
“Twenty years ago, then-Governor Sonny Perdue welcomed Hyundai Motor Group’s first investment in the Peach State,” said Georgia Chamber President & CEO Chris Clark. “This week, Governor Brian Kemp announced both the opening of the Hyundai Metaplant and an expansion at the Bryan County facility.” =
Clark emphasized the broader economic impact, noting that tens of thousands of Georgians are employed in the automotive and electric vehicle (EV) industries, generating billions in economic activity each year.
With the new annoucement, Clark also stated Georgia is now the unquestioned leader in advanced EV manufacturing, according to a press release from the Georgia Chamber.
“The Georgia Chamber thanks Hyundai Motor Group for increasing their record-breaking investment in Georgia, we applaud Governor Brian Kemp for his tireless dedication to pro-growth policies that made this possible, and we thank state and regional economic developers and other state leaders for their commitment to Georgia,” Clark said.
The Georgia Chamber expressed gratitude to Hyundai Motor Group for its increased investment, praised Governor Kemp for his commitment to pro-growth policies, and acknowledged the efforts of state and regional economic developers in making the expansion possible.
“We believe in long-term relationships, and this announcement shows that Georgia is the preferred destination for firms to meet the customer demand for automobiles for decades to come,” Clark said.
