Now that we all have clean houses and our yards look amazing, it’s time to look forward to those yard sales and bake sales that Augusta is noted to have in April and May. WOW….I remember making my schedule and where each of them were being held and determining where I wanted to go first. On the estate sale side, I know I’m going to do my best to be one of the first in line, and if it’s a church that’s noted for members that are amazing cooks, I’ll hit that one up first thing, too!
For our bake sale this week, we decided to go all out and make the presentation resemble a Country Fair and actually put Blue and Red Ribbons on the items we felt like WON the BEST of Show. No surprise to us was the Praline Poke Cake using Tony’s Chachere’s Praline Honey Ham Marinade and believe me, it really stole the show and took the Blue Ribbon. Loaded with flavor, moist and actually really fun to make, I think you will enjoy trying this recipe and having the marinade leftover to use as a sauce for Ham or to smear on Chicken before it goes on the grill.

Second Place went to our own Peanut Butter Pound Cake recipe from The VeryVera Cookbook. For those fans loyal to the mail order days of VeryVera and to the Cookbook, this was our July Cake of the month, and honestly, it is one of my personal favorites. It is an extremely moist cake, and the glaze that you put on top after it has cooled a bit is a great final addition to a star-studded pound cake.

Finally, NEW in our next cookbook, OCCASIONS, releasing March 2023, is the Buttermilk Coconut Pie. If you love a custard pie and fresh coconut, this is a must. I enjoyed reminiscing on the show about watching my grandmother crack the coconut and grate it fresh to put in this pie. It’s amazing how something supposedly so insignificant at the time can be a vivid memory to me now. I will have to say, of the three recipes, this one is truly my favorite!

I hope you will tune in today at 12:30 on WJBF or Saturday night at 7:30 to enjoy being “In the Kitchen with Vera” and also our spin on how to make your bake sale or one that you may be participating in a bit “over the top.” Just an added note, the recipe or cute ribbon can increase your sales price just a touch! The point is to make money, right?
Have Fun!
