Other individual sports have four major tournaments a year, but not disc golf — that is until now.

“We only had three majors — the World Championship, the U.S. Championship and the European Championship,” said Robert Leonard, tournament director. “Tennis and golf have four.”

The inaugural Professional Disc Golf Association’s Champions Cup Presented by Bushnell will be held at Wildwood Park in Appling, where the association is headquartered, April 14-17.

The event will draw 140 of the best male and female disc golfers in the world.

Leonard said players from countries including the United States, Canada, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Sweden will be part of the competition.

The event is by invitation only.

Winners from the organization’s Elite Series events which include five events on the PDGA National Tour and 11 Disc Golf Pro Tour stop and competitions such as the Pro Worlds, U.S. Disc Golf Championships, Women’s Disc Golf Championships, PDGA Masters Disc Golf World Championships, were invited to attend, according to the PDGA website.

While the inaugural event will be held in Appling, the Champions Cup will be played in other locations after this year. There will be a bidding process to bring the disc golf event to a city, he said.

The tournament will begin with women teeing off between 8 and 9:45 a.m. each day and the men between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Tickets to the event start at $15 for a one-day weekday pass to $215 for a weeklong VIP pass. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available at https://www.pdga.com/2022championscup.
