Incoming students at USCA can take new free online algebra preparatory course

Date: June 08, 2024

The University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) is now offering a new free online algebra preparatory course for new incoming students this summer.

This course, Mathematics Preparation Online Course, is designed to help students succeed in college algebra. The course will cover areas like number theory, set theory, linear equations, and quadratic and exponential functions. It will run from July 8 until Aug. 9, and it is available to both USCA and non-USCA students. Professor William Shipes will be the course instructor.

“Our main focus is to reach rising high school students who may feel a little uneasy about taking math courses in a college setting,” said Dr. Scott McKay, dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering. “When students succeed in their initial math course at college, they have a much higher rate of degree attainment.”

This college algebra course was created to help incoming students refresh and prepare for their incoming mathematics course in the fall since many students haven’t taken algebra courses since middle or early high school.

“We found that some of our college algebra students need more preparation to succeed in the course,” said Dr. Mohammad Hailat, chair of the Department of Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics. “This summer math prep course provides students with that preparation before they start college.”
