Inmate death at Aiken County Detention Center under investigation

Date: July 24, 2025

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has called in the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office to investigate the death of an inmate Wednesday at the Aiken County Detention Center, according to Maj. Jason Griffin of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate’s identity is being withheld until the Coroner’s Office can notify next of kin. Griffin said there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

This marks the first reported death at the detention center in more than a year. In March 2024, 34-year-old Tony Muldrow of Florence, S.C., died after experiencing a medical emergency while in custody. He was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers at approximately 5:22 a.m., where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

An autopsy for the most recent inmate death is expected to be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
