If bricks could speak, the walls of this Augusta bar and music venue would have quite a tale to tell.

Tucked away in the downstairs of the Olde Town Inn on Telfair Street lies one of Augusta’s best-kept secrets. The Fox’s Lair is a watering hole treasured by those in the know. It’s a long-standing establishment that’s waiting to be discovered by a new generation of music fans.

The Fox’s Lair is famous for hosting local musical acts, both established and new. Though the venue is small, the Lair boasts a powerful sound system and enough space for a five-piece band to perform. No matter which musical act you may discover when you descend the stairwell, you are sure to have a great time.

The Lair, as regulars refer to it, hosts live music every weekend. In addition to the weekend concerts, Dr. John Fisher performs Irish music on Tuesday nights. There is also an open mic each Thursday night for those who’d like to test the waters of live performance.

The intimate setting of this hideaway creates the perfect place to wind down after a long work week. Though bar seating is limited, there are plenty of tables available and enough room to gather with friends. The bartender will take good care of you and will not let you go thirsty. She will make you feel right at home. Be sure to tip her well.

I have been attending live music events at the Fox’s Lair since 2012. The first act I saw was local Americana band Silvertown, featuring Roger Davis on rhythm guitar, Duane Wilson on bass, and Ronnie Hill on lead guitar. I have attended most of their Fox’s Lair performances over the years. Other shows I’ve seen include those by Atlanta native Rian Adkinson and local North Augusta artist Roger Enevoldsen.

Local Augusta singer-songwriter Vicky Grady performed with her band on March 27, bringing her warm energy to the legendary room while performing her upbeat, original tunes. Vicky’s British accent brings a smooth touch to songs that mix rock and roll with a hint of the blues. She also plays acoustic guitar.

Parking is located off 4th Street between Greene and Telfair Streets. Look for the sign.

With its cozy vibe and welcoming staff, The Fox’s Lair proves that underground is the best place to be.
