The IRONMAN® 70.3® Augusta triathlon will remain a fixture in the city through 2030, thanks to a newly signed five-year agreement between IRONMAN and the Augusta Sports Council.
The race, which features a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run, has drawn roughly 2,500 athletes annually since its debut in 2009.
The Augusta Sports Council estimates the event has generated more than $76 million in economic impact over the years.
Scott Langen, vice president ofoperations – North America for IRONMAN, called Augusta’s race “one of the most popular races in the North American portfolio year after year.” He added, “We look forward to continuing to build on what we have created here in Augusta since it was first launched in 2009 and welcoming athletes and the community back to this weekend’s race.”
Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson said the extension will continue to bring worldwide attention to the city.
“Each year, IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta attracts thousands of athletes, families, and spectators from around the world—bringing not only incredible athletic competition, but also millions in economic impact and a spotlight on our city’s vibrant community,” he said.
Michelle Pippin, CEO of the Augusta Sports Council, credited community support for the event’s success.
“Since the inaugural race in 2009, we’ve built strong, lasting relationships with IRONMAN, the IRONMAN Foundation, our local partners, and the thousands of dedicated volunteers who make this event not only possible, but successful year after year,” she said.
In addition to the athletic competition, the IRONMAN Foundation has donated more than $20,000 annually to local charities, totaling nearly $300,000 in community support.
This year’s race was held Sunday, Aug. 28, after the 2024 event was canceled due to Hurricane Helene.
