Jags one win away from Elite 8

It was a tense battle at Christenberry Fieldhouse Sunday, but the Augusta University Jaguars pulled out a victory in the second round of the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament edging past University of North Carolina Pembroke 82-76.

Tyshaun Crawford led the scoring with 21 and Miguel Arnold had 16. The Jags had a field goal percentage of 45.6% compared to the BraveHawks at 41.5%

The BraveHawks held a narrow lead at the half 40-34, but the home court advantage of the top-seeded Jaguars helped as the fans showed their spirit.

The Augusta University Jaguars are heading finals of the regional championships Tuesday. Their opponent is Queens University of Charlotte, who defeated Lincoln Memorial 81-76 to advance. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

If the Jaguars win Tuesday, they’ll advance to the Elite 8 which will be held March 24-27 in Evansville, Ind.

Under Coach Dip Metress, the Jaguars have been to the Elite 8 before. They made it three consecutive seasons 2007-2008, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. They advanced to the semi-finals in the 2007-2008 season and appeared on national television.

The Jaguars improve their record to 30-3, tying the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 record for most wins. They finished 30-5 in 2008-2009 and 30-4 in 2010-2011.
