Jim Steed wins Columbia County District 2 Commission seat

With all precincts reporting in, Jim Steed has won the Columbia County Board of Commissioners District 2 seat.

The unofficial results had Steed (R) with 2,998 votes (54%) and Howard Johnson (D) with 2,546 (46%) votes. 

The election had 21,550 out of 110,500 or 19.5% of registered voters cast ballots.

Homestead exemption questions

With regards to the two homestead exemption questions, both passed with high approval from voters.

  • Columbia County Homestead Exemption (Columbia County) question: Shall the Act be approved which provides a homestead exemption from Columbia County ad valorem taxes for county purposes in the amount of $8,000.00 of the assessed value of the homestead for residents of that county?: Yes: 18,392 (86.5%), No: 2,790 (13.1%)
  • Columbia County Homestead Exemption (Board of Education): Shall the Act be approved which provides a homestead exemption from Columbia County school district ad valorem taxes for educational purposes in the amount of $8,000.00 of the assessed value of the homestead for residents of that school district?: Yes: 17,688 (83.5%), No: 3,483 (16.4%)

City of Harlem election

For the City of Harlem election, incumbent Roxanne Whitaker was re-elected after being the only person to qualify. For the two city council seats, Joshua Brantley and Dustin Driggers won those seats.

  • For mayor: Roxanne Whitaker (incumbent): 527 (100%)
  • For city council (two seats up for election):
    • Joshua Brantley: 403 (38.8%)
    • Dustin Driggers: 345 (33.2%)
    • Tara McNaylor: 290 (27.9%)

City of Grovetown election (two seats up for election)

The City of Grovetown election saw Jacqueline Rivera-Player and Veronica Simpkins win the two seats up for election.

  • Sylvia C. Martin, (incumbent): 770 (24.8%)
  •  Jacqueline Rivera-Player: 879 (28.3%)
  • Veronica Simpkins: 930 (29.9%)
  • Kay Turner: 522 (16.8%)

Public Service Commission race in Columbia County

  • District 2: Tim Echols (incumbent, Republican): 10,262 (48%)
  • District 2: Alicia M. Johnson (Democrat): 11,084 (51.9%)
  • District 3: Fitz Johnson (incumbent, Republican): 10,322 (48.3%)
  • District 3: Peter Hubbard (Democrat) (statewide special election): 11,036 (51.6%)

Statewide, Johnson and Hubbard each had over 62% of the votes as of 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The results do not include any provisional ballots and will be certified by the Columbia County Board of Elections on Monday, Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Appling Warehouse, located at 205 Range Road, building L. A pre-certification meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Appling Warehouse.
