Augusta’s July Job Fair will be preceded by two workshops, the city’s Human Resources Director Anita Rookard announced during Wednesday’s Augusta Commission committee meetings.
“We’re having a huge job career fair July 30,” Rookard said. “What we’re adding to it is a catalyst. We have a workshop that we’re providing. The object of the workshop is to remove barriers, the
things that stop us from being able to apply for jobs and get work.

“You know the excuses that we make: ‘I don’t know how to fill out an application.’ ‘I don’t have a suit or a jacket to wear for the interview.’ ‘I haven’t had job interview questions in years.’ ‘I don’t
know the first step.'”
So Rookard and her team decided to create a workshop with the support of two partners.
The first workshop on July 17 will be on “Dress for Success” and “How to Fill Out a Job Application.”
“Goodwill is giving us vouchers,” Rookard said. “So when you attend these workshops, you can get a voucher and go and get a piece of clothing to help you prepare for your job interview.

The second workshop will be on July 24, through the Georgia Department of Labor during which counselors will work with attendees on building a resume and answering interview questions.
“And all that leads up to the job fair itself from 1-6 p.m. July 30, at the Kroc Center,”” Rookard said.
The object of the workshop is not just for the city of Augusta to provide opportunities to people who are out of work, but for every employer looking for employees. Those from manufacturing to the
hospitality industry have been invited to participate, Rookard said.

This job fair is one of many to come, she said. There will be one in the summer and one in the winter to meet the needs of the community.
“The object here is to bring the employers to the people,” Rookard said.
