As Augusta Commission elections heat up, District 1 incumbent Jordan Johnson is celebrating the legacy of being endorsed for reelection by a former commission family.

Betty Beard, the downtown commissioner who followed her late husband, Lee Beard, into office announced Tuesday she’s endorsing Johnson for a second term on the commission.

“I am pleased to endorse Jordan for reelection as District 1 commissioner,” she said in a statement. “Jordan has shown a special commitment to our community, listening to its members and responding to their needs.”

Johnson expressed gratitude for the endorsement and reaffirmed his commitment to serving Augusta.

“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of former District 1 Commissioner Betty Beard,” he said. “Her service to our community has left an indelible mark on District 1. I am committed to building upon the legacies of both Commissioners Lee and Betty Beard and will continue to work collaboratively with all of Augusta to address the needs of our city, just as they did.”

Lee Beard was a longtime educator and one of two commissioners to transition from the Augusta City Council to the consolidated government in 1996. He died in office in 2003. The commission renamed its meeting room as the Lee Beard Commission Chamber. The commission appointed Betty Beard to complete his term and she was elected to the seat in 2005.

De l’Aigle withdraws from commission race

Johnson has four challengers for the District 1 seat including Matt Aitken, who won a single term in 2009, former 2009 candidate Jo’Rae Jenkins and newcomer Kenny Osario. Downtown activist Kevin de l’Aigle, whose name will appear on the ballot, withdrew from the election last week.

Early voting is ongoing through May 17 at Augusta Municipal Building, the Warren Road Community Center, Robert Howard Community Center and Highland Park.
