Proposed development in Columbia County, as indicated from applications submitted to the Planning Department in the past week, includes a new fitness center in Martinez, a church expansion in Evans and a new location for a trailer retailer in Harlem.
On Nov. 14, Kimberly Hedrick filed for conditional use of a warehouse on a parcel at 472 Flowing Wells Rd., along the intersection of Flowing Wells and Mason McKnight Jr. Pkwy.
The 11-acre property holds detached several suites, one of which Hedrick aims to convert to a fitness facility specializing in aerial yoga and dance classes. According to the narrative document included with the application, the warehouse space is suitable for the yoga studio for its high ceilings and exposed beams, for “aerial equipment attachment.”

On Nov. 18, Journey Community Church applied for a plan revision at its property on 4798 Hardy McManus Rd., to accommodate the next phases in its expansion.
The church’s plans for the 25-acre parcel include a two-story, 6,000-square foot structure for its children’s ministry, added on to the existing church building; a temporary outside patio area, renovations to the parking area and revisions to the ingress and egress points on Hardy McManus. The narrative document the church included with its request says it plans to complete its revisions by September of next year.
Billy Williams, owner of Quality Trailers of Harlem, has submitted a request to rezone 14 acres he owns along Gordon Highway from Residential Agricultural to Light Industrial district. Williams aims to move his retailing business—which deals in trailers, car haulers and related equipment—from its current location at 515 W. Milledgeville Rd., to his property at 3894 Gordon Hwy.
The move would entail developing some 28,000 square feet of the property, including 18,000 square feet of warehouse space.
On Nov. 16, AAA Sign Co. and Legacy Holdings submitted a rezoning request for the three-story Legacy building at 444 N. Belair Rd., to allow signage changes.
The accompanying narrative document notes that while the bottom floor of the office building “houses tenants with small spaces and individual signs over each entry,” and the second floor is meant to be occupied by one tenant, yet to be determined; the master sign plan is for the top floor tenant, Firstate Bank.
Firstate has another Columbia County location, in Harlem; and currently has five other branches in Georgia. Columbia County District 2 Commissioner Don Skinner is the senior vice president of the bank, which is headquartered in Wrens.
All of the items are scheduled for consideration by the Columbia County Planning Commission on Dec. 15.
