Jury convicts Evans man of murder in beating death

A Columbia County jury has convicted an Evans man of beating his roommate to death.

Anthony Alexander Burns, 43, was on trial this week for malice murder and felony murder in the Aug. 22, 2022, beating death of Howard Kenneth Winning.

Winning was 61 and worked as a server and bartender. Burns was living with him in a small townhome on Evans Lake Drive, according to prior reports.

Burns was a convicted sex offender who served multiple prison sentences prior to his last release in 2018. He’d been in jail without bond since the incident.

Superior Court Judge J. Wade Padgett sentenced Burns to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
