After three years on Grovetown’s planning commission, Shelly Kandian is eyeing a new spot in government. She plans to run for Grovetown’s City Council in the November election.

The seats of council members Sylvia Martin and Debra Fisher will be on the Nov. 2 ballot. Both councilwomen are eligible to run again.

Qualifying for prospective candidates was Aug. 16-18. Kandian was the only new qualifier.

“I’ve enjoyed the changes that have been made in Grovetown over the last few years,” said Kandian. “I just wanted to be part of it.”

Kandian and her husband, both U.S. Navy veterans, moved to Grovetown in 2013. They are now both out of the military and have embraced Grovetown as their hometown.

Kandian has already familiarized herself with the municipal public service with her planning commission stint. She resigned from that post the day she qualified for candidacy.

“This seemed like the next logical step,” said Kandian.

Two issues that Kandian hopes to address if she is elected to the council are traffic and creating safe places for children to walk and play.

Overall, however, Kandian is not only pleased with the present state of what she recognizes a fast-growing town. She is all too eager to participate and appreciates that there are multiple women on the ballot this year.

Kandian hopes to meet voters at an informal meet and greet event around 10 a.m. Sept. 6 at the pavilion at Goodale Park pavilion.

“I feel like we’re moving in the right direction as a whole,” said Kandian.” The city is doing great things. I’d like to be part of it, my kids are growing up here, we chose to retire here because it’s such a good community. I’d just like to help make it stay that way.”
