Have you ever wanted to learn how to kayak?

Well now you can with the upcoming Kayak Columbia County event. Janet Wheatley, programs and events manager, said the county tries to do a monthly activity and this program is one of those activities.

“It’s just a way for people to come out and do like a fun morning of learning the basics of kayaking and canoeing,” Wheatley said. “We have instruction provided by Andy Colbert who’s there at Betty’s Branch, which is at Riverside Park, and once they do the basics and learn the instructions then they’ll go out on a kayaking tour.”

There will be single kayaks, tandem kayaks and canoes, Wheatley said. The cost is $10 per person and there is a limited amount of space, so those interested need to register as soon as they can.

Wheatley said the outdoor recreation program is a new program the county started this year. There are monthly outdoor activities for people to try, including a kid’s fishing rodeo. But this is the first kayak one.

“We’re just trying to offer different activities that are outdoor related that people can do here locally and they may not know how to do,” Wheatley said. “The kayaking, canoeing, they may not be comfortable, so this way you have an instructor and you can go out with a group of people so you don’t do it all by yourself and maybe you’ll make new friends and meet new people as well.”

Kayak Columbia County will be Friday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. To register, visit the Columbia County Parks, Recreation and Events Facebook page or visit columbiacountyga.gov.
