Kemp appoints Augusta judge to family violence commission

Augusta Superior Court Judge Ashley Wright

Date: January 19, 2024

Gov. Brian Kemp has appointed Augusta Circuit Superior Court Judge Ashley Wright to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.

The appointment was one of 85 announced by the governor’s office Thursday.

Since her appointment to the bench in 2017 by Gov. Nathan Deal, Wright has implemented felony drug, mental wellness and veteran’s treatment courts, a statement said. As Augusta District Attorney for nine years prior to her appointment, Wright oversaw many cases involving crimes against children, sexual assaults and other violence crime, it said.

Wright earned her bachelor’s degree from Randolph College, formerly Randolph-Macon Women’s College, and her J.D. from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. She has served on the Georgia Judicial Nominating Committee and the State Bar Committee on Criminal Justice Reform. She is a past president of the District Attorneys Association of Georgia.

The Commission on Family Violence provides training statewide on family violence and related issues, such as workplace violence, monitors family violence intervention programs and creates and maintains community task forces.

It serves as a clearinghouse for statewide family violence data, including fatalities, provides support to survivors of murder-suicide and conducts legislative advocacy and research on a range of issues.
