The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, and one restaurant received a failing score from inspections conducted on Sept. 15–19.
Worst scores in this week’s health inspection
This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 69 earned by Knuckle Sandwiches, located at 1149 Broad Street, in Augusta.
During the inspection, the inspector noticed debris on food racks that were holding dishes and kitchen storage containers, which resulted in a four-point deduction.
“Observed debris on food racks holding dishes and storage containers,” the report stated. “Ensure food contact surfaces are properly washed, rinsed, sanitized, and air dried on a clean surface protected from contamination.”
The inspector also reported finding food stored past its due date, resulting in four points docked from the health score.
“Observed cole slaw held past discard date in cooler,” the report stated. “Discard. Monitor use-by dates and discard when appropriate.”
Another nine points were deducted from the health score for the inspector witnessing food being improperly stored.
“Observed [temperature control safety] foods (cheese, chicken, and lettuce) being held above 41 degrees Fahrenheit in cooler and on countertop,” the report stated. “[Temperature control safety] foods must be cold-held at 41 degrees Fahrenheit and below.”
After losing another point for having debris on the floor, the inspector deducted four more points for seeing chemicals stored above food.
“Observed chemical sanitizer stored on top of bucket containing brown sugar,” the report stated. “Separate chemicals from food products.”
The establishment lost three more points for the inspector observing a bluetooth speaker stored on top of a container of food.

Finally, the inspector deducted three points from the health score for witnessing insect activity.
“Observed dead bugs in front area,” the report stated. “Remove bugs and consult with a licensed pest control operator.”
The second lowest score of the week was a 78 given to an Econo Lodge, located at 1103 15th Street, in Augusta.
The inspector deducted four points for noticing a lack of necessary paperwork on site.
“Manager lacking proof of Food Manager Certification,” the report stated. “Post CFSM certificate in public view.”
During the inspection, the inspector deducted four more points for finding a lack of required documentation about employee responsibilities and management information.
“The [person in charge] could not provide documentation or otherwise satisfactorily demonstrate during the inspection, that all food employees and conditional employees are informed of their responsibility to report to management information about their health and activities as it relates to diseases that are transmissible through food,” the report stated.
The inspector deducted another nine points for finding dairy products held in unsafe temperatures.
“Observed dairy products held above 41F; must be held at 41F or below,” the report stated.
The inspector also deducted another three points for not finding a thermometer in a necessary area.
“No conspicuously located thermometer in holding unit,” the report stated. “Provide/place thermometers in all coolers to be able to monitor temperatures.”
Following the Econo Lodge inspection, the third lowest score of the week was an 80 given to a Waffle House, located at 1629 Gordon Highway, in Augusta.
The inspector deducted four points for noticing bacteria on kitchen appliances.
“Observed black and pink buildup in bulk ice machines,” the report stated. “Clean. Increase cleaning frequency.”
During the inspection, the inspector deducted nine points for finding food held at unsafe temperatures.
“Observed chili, ham, butter, and chicken holding temperatures above 41 degrees Fahrenheit in coolers. Observed walk-in-cooler holding food at 44 degrees Fahrenheit,” the report stated.
Another four points were docked from the establishment’s health inspection score due to the inspector finding food items past their use-by and discard dates.
“Observed waffle batter held past discard date in reach-in-cooler,” the report stated. “Discard. Monitor use-by dates and discard when appropriate.”
